dc.description.abstract | In its broadest sense, e-learning is the use of the Internet for education. E-learning encompasses a pedagogical approach that typically aspires to be flexible, engaging and learner-centred; one that encourages interaction (staff-staff, staff-student, student-student), and collaboration and communication, often asynchronously (though not exclusively so). Historically, there have been two common e-learning modes: distance learning and computer assisted instruction. E-learning can be used by medical educators to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of educational interventions in the face of the social, scientific, and pedagogical challenges. E-learning has gained popularity in the past decade; however, its use is highly variable among medical schools and appears to be more common in basic science courses than in clinical clerkships. The aim of this paper is to review e-learning and its role in medical education by focusing on key terms, the components of e-learning, the history of e-learning, faculty development for implementation of efficient and effective e-learning. | en_US |
