Cannabis: Action Mechanisms and Potential Roles in the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Özet
Cannabinoids are natural products that act on cannabinoid receptors. They coordinate various functions, such as control of glucose utilization and energy homeostasis by regulating pancreatic hormone secretion. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance and pancreatic ?-cell dysfunction. Epidemiological studies revealed that the prevalence of T2DM will increase drastically in the forthcoming years and it will be a global burden. Conventional drugs and insulin therapy have long term side-effects and complications. Consumption of natural products has recently gained much attraction to prevent T2DM associated complications. This chapter explains the potential role and mechanisms of action of the Cannabis plant and its components in the treatment of T2DM. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
