Population Dynamics of the Republic of Tiva: A Historical and Socio-Demographic Review

Abstract

The Republic of Tiva is one of the Turkic Republics of the Russian Federation located in the south of Siberia. The aim of this study is to analyse the population of the Republic of Tiva from a geopolitical point of view. The Republic of Tiva draws attention as a geopolitically important region due to its geographical location. Throughout the historical process, these lands have been the scene of the struggle of nations and the centre of rivalry between the states of the region. The process of large-scale change in the population structure of the Republic of Tiva began in the 20th century during the Soviet Union. In this process, ethno-demographic, political, cultural and economic aspects of Tiva were negatively affected. Since the relations between the Republic of Tiva and the Russians have a long history, this study focuses on the regional effects of the demographic bond between the two communities. With the beginning of the Russian Federation period, changes were observed in the policies implemented in previous periods. Today, the influence of the Russian population on the demographic structure of the Republic of Tiva has significantly decreased. In this study, the parameters of the population, density, distribution, fertility and mortality rates, rural-urban population, ethnic composition and gender structure of the Republic of Tiva by years are analysed in detail.

Tuva Cumhuriyeti, Sibirya’nin güneyinde yer alan Rusya Federasyonu’na bagli Türk Cumhuriyetlerinden biridir. Bu çalismanin amaci Tuva Cumhuriyeti’nin nüfusunu jeopolitik açidan analiz etmektir. Tuva Cumhuriyeti cografi konumu nedeniyle jeopolitik açidan önemli bir bölge olarak dikkat çekmektedir. Tarihsel süreç boyunca bu topraklar, uluslarin mücadelesine sahne olmus ve bölge devletleri arasindaki rekabetin merkezi haline gelmistir. Tuva Cumhuriyeti’nin nüfus yapisindaki büyük ölçekli degisim süreci 20. yüzyilda Sovyetler Birligi döneminde baslamistir. Bu süreçte Tuva etno-demografik, siyasi, kültürel ve ekonomik yönleri olumsuz etkilenmistir. Tuva Cumhuriyeti ile Ruslar arasindaki iliskiler uzun bir geçmise sahip oldugundan bu çalisma, iki toplum arasindaki demografik bagin bölgesel etkilerine odaklanmaktadir. Rusya Federasyonu döneminin baslamasiyla birlikte önceki dönemlerde uygulanan politikalarda degisiklikler gözlenmistir. Günümüzde Rus nüfusunun Tuva Cumhuriyeti’nin demografik yapisi üzerindeki etkisi önemli ölçüde azalmistir. Bu çalismada Tuva Cumhuriyeti’nin yillara göre nüfus miktari, yogunlugu, dagilimi, dogurganlik ve ölüm oranlari, kir-kent nüfus miktarlari, etnik kompozisyon ve cinsiyet yapisi parametreleri ayrintili olarak incelenmistir.
