The Role of Midwife and Nurse in Breastfeeding

Abstract

Breast milk is the most basic nutritional source for the maintenance and development of newborn health in order to maintain healthy growth and development. There are short- and longterm benefits of breast milk on maternal and infant health. Although the lifetime benefits of breast milk and breastfeeding are accepted by countries, it is seen that breastfeeding rates are not at the desired level. In international and national breastfeeding programs, it is stated that midwives and nurses have great responsibilities to improve breastfeeding rates. Breastfeeding is a learned behavior, so that breastfeeding training is crucial in order to improve breastfeeding behavior and attitudes during the prenatal, perinatal and postpartum period. Studies have reported that breastfeeding rates were adversely affected if insufficient attention was given to breastfeeding training. In the study, where 10 steps in successful breastfeeding were revised in 2018, it was emphasized that in addition to breastfeeding training and counseling practices to be given to mothers, staff should have sufficient knowledge and equipment to support breastfeeding. Therefore, the knowledge and practices of the personnel who will provide breastfeeding training and counseling are also important. The aim of this review is to discuss the knowledge and practice of midwives and nurses about breast milk and breastfeeding and to discuss the role of midwives and nurses in breastfeeding.

Anne sütü, yenidoganin sagliginin korunmasi ve gelistirilmesi, büyüme-gelisme süreçlerine saglikli bir sekilde devam edebilmesi için gerekli olan en temel besin kaynagidir. Anne sütünün anne ve bebek sagligi üzerinde kisa ve uzun vadeli yararlari oldugu bilinmektedir. Ancak anne sütünün ve emzirmenin yasam boyu sagladigi yararlar evrensel ölçüde kabul görse de emzirme oranlarinin istenilen düzeyde olmadigi görülmektedir. Uluslararasi ve ulusal emzirme programlarinda, emzirme oranlarinin iyilestirilmesi sürecinde ebe ve hemsirelere büyük sorumluluklar düstügü belirtilmistir. Emzirme, ögrenilen bir davranis olup, emzirme davranis ve tutumlarinin gelistirilmesi için dogum öncesi, dogum sirasi ve dogum sonrasi dönemde emzirme egitiminin verilmesi önem tasimaktadir. Yapilan çalismalarda emzirme egitimine yeterli düzeyde önem verilmemesi durumunda emzirme oranlarinin olumsuz yönde etkilendigi bildirilmistir. Basarili emzirmede 10 adimin 2018 yilinda revize edildigi çalismada, annelere verilecek olan emzirme egitimi ve danismanlik uygulamalarina ek olarak, personelin emzirmeyi desteklemek için yeterli bilgi ve donanima sahip olmasi gerektigi vurgulanmistir. Bu nedenle emzirme egitimini ve danismanligini verecek olan personelin bilgi ve uygulamalari büyük önem tasimaktadir. Bu derlemede ebe ve hemsirelerin anne sütü ve emzirme konusundaki bilgi düzeyleri ve uygulama durumlari ele alinarak, ebe ve hemsirelerin emzirmedeki rollerinin tartisilmasi amaçlanmaktadir.
